IP Address

Each computer that is connected to the Internet has a clearly identifiable, numeric address: the IP address. An IP address (IPv4) usually comprises four sequences of digits that are separated by periods, e.g.: 78.110.226.162. A newer form for an IP address is the IPv6. This new IP address is a 128 bit value with a logical structure, which can be assigned on a network interface.  For example the IPv4 address used here converted into IPv6 in hexadecimal notation is 2002:4E6E:E2A2:0:0:0:0:0.

Static IP addresses enable the same computer to be contacted under the same address at any time (e.g., by a Web server). Dynamic IP addresses are allocated for instance for dialing up to the Internet. They receive an unoccupied IP address which will not be the same every time.
