IMSI
IMSI (International Mobile Subscriber Identity) is used within the
SIM card
in all
GSM
mobile phones, to uniquely identify the mobile subscriber on a specific mobile network. An IMSI is usually 15 digits long. The first 3 digits are the
Mobile Country Code (MCC)
, and are followed by the
Mobile Network Code (MNC)
, either 2 digits (European standard) or 3 digits (North American standard). The remaining digits are the mobile subscriber identification number (
MSISDN
) within the network's customer base.
The IMSI and the MSISDN (telephone number to the SIM card in a mobile phone) are two important numbers used to identify a mobile phone. IMSI is often used as a key in the
HLR
("subscriber database") and MSISDN is the number normally dialed to connect a call to the mobile phone.
