HLR
The HLR (Home Location Register) of a mobile network
is a central database that contains details of each of its mobile phone subscribers. It stores details of every subscriber such as
MSISDN
,
IMSI
and logged-in
MSC
.
The HLR data is stored for as long as a subscriber remains with the mobile phone operator. The main function of the HLR is to manage the fact that
SIM cards
and phones move around a lot by receiving and processing updates on their position, sending subscriber data to the
Visitor Location Register (VLR)
if they are
roaming
and removing this information when they are no longer roaming in that network.
In
Mobile Number Portability
environments, HLR lookups perform a key role in the correct routing of text messaging and voice calls.
